I am writing for the first time as Tropical World’s Young Brand Ambassador, so far this journey has been very exciting…

I have always visited Tropical World since I was very young and have always had a great passion for wanting to learn about all types of animals, so having this opportunity is brilliant and an experience I will remember.

My journey

My journey as brand ambassador has been very exciting right from the beginning. Initially my parents and family entered me for this competition, and I couldn’t wait to hear if I would be picked.

After hearing I was shortlisted, I visited Capital FM Studios to do some recording. I felt really privileged but kind of nervous too, because I had never been to a radio station before. Penny from Capital FM made me feel really welcome and less nervous.

The next part of my journey was to visit Tropical World when it was closed to the rest of the public to meet Steven Dickie – Tropical World’s Head Keeper. This sounded so good and I couldn’t wait for the time to arrive. During this visit we spent lots of time looking at the animals and talking about each of them.

Upon being selected as the finalist I was happy to find I out I had been picked as the winner and I found out as I was walking home from school, so I couldn’t wait to tell the rest of my family that evening.

Spending time with the Head Keeper

This is Steven Dickie, Head Keeper who I met on my visit to Tropical World. I really enjoyed spending time with him and look forward to my Keeper experience visits with Steven throughout 2018.

I knew being selected as the winner would mean I could spend so much more time at the place I really enjoy visiting. On my next visit I met the Executive member for Environments and Sustainability; Councillor Lucinda Yeadon, to receive my winners certificate and pictures as part of the finalist role. We made a video together that evening in Tropical World which was really good fun.

Looking to the future...

I am really looking forward to going in to the enclosures to find out as much as I can about all the animals, so that I can tell you all, what I have learnt.

As part of my role, I will be visiting Lotherton and Temple Newsam to experience as much as I can, so if you see me please say hello, I may be wearing my Tropical World Ambassador T-shirt and would be happy to talk to anyone. I know a lot about animals already, so I would be happy to talk to anyone about the animals in Tropical World if I see you there! - Thomas
