Tropical World and shop is currently closed in line with National lockdown: Stay at Home external link government guidance to manage the impact of COVID-19.
Our cafe remains open for takeaway daily from 10am to 3pm.
We will update you on any further changes though our social media platforms and the website.
Health and safety measures
There is a reduced capacity in place to help keep visitors safe.
When visiting Tropical World we remind you to please only visit with members of your household or support bubble.
You can find out more about the national risk alert system and what it means for our city on the council's local rules page.
You will need to provide contact information for test and trace. This can be done though scanning the NHS QR codes at our attraction entrance or providing details to a member of our team on arrival.
Face coverings must be worn inside Tropical World at all times, unless you are exempt or seated in the cafe to eat or drink. Hand sanitiser units are available throughout the building for your use, with social distancing markings to help you maintain a two metre distance from other visitors.
These health and safety measures are a mandatory legal requirement set by the UK government. Visitors that do not wish to wear a mask (unless exempt) or do not provide contact details during their visit will not be admitted into the attraction.
As much as we would love for you to visit, the safety of our visitors and staff is our first priority. If you have pre–booked a ticket and do not feel comfortable complying with these measures, then please email us at
email@example.com so that we can issue a refund.
Plan your visit
While we have been closed, our teams have continued to work hard behind the scenes caring for our animal collection. Tropical World works with two fair trade butterfly farms in Costa Rica and the Philippines, who supply us with our pupae. Due to the pandemic and travel restrictions, our butterfly pupae supply has been stopped temporarily. We hope to continue our Fairtrade agreement soon.
In the meantime, look out for holes in the leaves throughout the attraction, where a small Owl Butterfly population has continued to breed and watch out for the caterpillars in the Butterfly House!
For safety reasons, we would prefer it if you could book your tickets in advance online.
We have a limited number of tickets available each day, bookable in hourly slots with a maximum purchase of six tickets per booking. You can enter Tropical World at any time within your booked time slot. We would advise staggering your arrival time to allow for queues. You will not be asked to leave early if you do not enter at the start of your booking slot time.
If you have a discounted entry, you will need to bring the associated discount card as evidence. If you do not, you will need to pay the difference on the day of your visit.

Toilet facilities are available in the cafe and shop. Toilets inside Tropical World are not open to the public. Please note, we do not currently have access to a changing places toilet facility.
We are no longer taking any school visits or party bookings. We hope to resume this soon. Volunteering, events and talks have also been suspended during this time.
